Common Dental Problems In Children

Many a times parents neglect their child’s oral health thinking that primary teeth will eventually shed, and it is not worthwhile to spend money / time on providing a good oral health.

In children, primary teeth play a pivotal role for eating, phonetics and esthetics. As parents are primary caregivers of children they should have knowledge about primary teeth, maintaining its health in order to build confidence in their children.

NURSING BOTTLE CARIES

A unique pattern of dental decay in young children due to prolonged nursing habit.

• Parents should clean the infants teeth after every feed

• In case of considerable emotional dependence on bottle, use plain or         fluoridated water.

GINGIVITIS AND RAMPANT CARIES

Gingivitis means inflammation of gums, or gingiva caused by bacterial infection

•DIET: Parents should restrict the number of times of carbohydrate intake instead of the quantity.

•ORAL HYGIENE: Brushing twice a day, for at least 2 mins with fluoridated toothpaste.

• Go for preventive care check up with a oral health professional.

CROWDING, SPACING , BITE ALIGNMENT ISSUES AND OVERLAPPING /CROOKED TEETH

•These are some common problems that start to develop from the age group of 6-12 and an early intervention can help correcting these problems before they become severe.

Things to remember if you are worried about your child’s dental health?

Your child should see a dentist by their first birthday. Follow up every 6 months.

Teach good habits!  Brushing twice daily with a  fluoridated toothpaste is a must.

If the child develops any oral habits such as thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, then visit a dentist . In  the long run a lot of dental problems are created due to these habits.

Avoid your child’s habit of frequent mid meal snacking and refrain them from sucking on sugary items like candies.
