Your teeth are meant to last a lifetime, hence It is necessary to keep your teeth healthy. You can protect them for years to come by practising proper oral hygiene and a healthy dental routine. A healthy oral regime means better conversations, healthy relationships and a confident smile. At Dixit Dental Care, we recommend the below healthy practices to keep your teeth healthy and strong over the years to come!

Choose the Right Toothbrush

Use a toothbrush with soft end-rounded bristles and a small head. This helps in reaching most teeth surfaces. Make sure to change your toothbrush every 3 months to avoid damaging your gums from worn out bristles.

Choose a Toothpaste with Optimal Fluoride Content

There are many important things to consider while buying toothpaste. Aside from whitening power and flavour, the most important thing when buying toothpaste is making sure it contains fluoride. Fluoride provides a protective barrier, hardens tooth enamel and fights germs that cause tooth decay.

Brush your Teeth Twice a Day!

It is a general recommendation to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing before bed helps us get rid of the germs that may accumulate on our teeth throughout the day. Yet many of us continue to neglect this.

Never Neglect your Tongue

Your tongue is part of your dental regimen. Plaque may buildup on other areas of your mouth like your tongue which may cause bad mouth odour and other oral problems. To avoid this, gently brush your tongue once a day or you can also use wide range of commercially available tongue cleaners.

Floss Regularly

In addition to removing small pieces of food that get stuck between your teeth, flossing helps to stimulate the gums, reduce plaque, and help lower inflammation in the gum area. Therefore, it is recommended to floss at least once a day.

Be Mindful of your Brushing Technique

The technique and time you put into brushing your teeth also create a big difference. So, take your time, place your toothbrush with the bristles angled 45 degrees between the teeth and gums and gently move the brush in circular motions for two to three minutes to remove plaque and germs. Make sure to reach all areas of your mouth, including the inner and outer surfaces.

Limit the Intake of Sodas and Acidic Foods

Soda of any kind, be it sugar or diet, along with food products like acidic fruits, teas, and coffee can wear down tooth enamel, thereby harming the teeth. The acid in these items attacks teeth and wears down the enamel, which goes on to create cavities, leaves stains on the tooth surface and causes tooth decay.

Moderate your Alcohol Consumption Levels

Teeth are more likely to be stained by the dark barley and malts found in darker beers, or by chromogens present in wines and other colourful beverages. You may also damage your teeth if you chew the ice in your drinks, which can break your teeth, or if you add citrus juices to your beverage. Abstinence from alcohol or usage in moderation is the best way to avoid these problems.

Rinse after Every Meal

Water is considered to be the best beverage for your overall health — including oral health. It is recommended to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after eating anything. This can help remove all remaining food particles from all corners of the mouth and avoid accumulation of plaque in your mouth.

Visit your Dentist Regularly

No matter how dutifully you brush and floss your teeth, everyone needs to see a dentist regularly. You should visit your dentist for cleanings and checkups at least twice a year. Your dentist will help remove plaque, and calculus buildup from your teeth, look for other potential problems and offer treatments to help take care of your teeth and gums.
