A comprehensive cosmetic dentistry process, smile makeovers help improve the overall appearance of your smile. Your dentist analyses your facial appearance, teeth, gums, lips, and even your skin tone and hair colour, to design the perfect smile for you.

The procedure is definitely not a one-size-fits-all, and every case deals with a unique appearance, and unique factors and desires- all of which requires a trained cosmetic dentist to customize the smile makeover. Since there are multiple procedures involved, and the results are subjective, patients are involved in the aesthetic choices, often getting to see a preview of what the finished procedure would look like, even before any dental work actually commences.

Digital Smile Design, or DSD, is a conceptual tool with multiple uses that has become indispensable for smile makeover treatments. The tool helps improve communication between dentist and patient, enhance diagnostic vision, and increase predictability during the treatment process.

Using this tool, the dentist can carefully analyse the facial and dental characteristics of the patient, while bringing to light any critical factors that might have been overlooked during diagnostic cast-based or photographic evaluations. The DSD draws reference lines and shapes over oral digital photographs in a specific sequence to enhance diagnostic visualization so the restorative team can better evaluate the risks and limitations of the case, whether it is asymmetries and disharmonies, or violations of esthetic principles.

Before getting into the process itself, the dentist will examine your mouth to determine the problems and the best treatment options available for you. He or she will examine the condition of your teeth to check for any cavities or damages, gingival tissues to check for their health, jaw muscles and occlusion to check if or not you have a stable bite as it is one of the major factors that contribute to pains in your mouth and causes wear of teeth and finally the aesthetics i.e. the color, shape, size, and proportions of your teeth.

The procedures that might follow after thorough inspection include prophylactic teeth cleaning, crown lengthening and contouring your gum tissue, reduction of natural tooth such that crowns or veneers can be placed, orthodontics (braces) in order to move your teeth into the optimal position, dental implants and restoration to replace missing teeth and/or anchor bridge restorations and suggested implants or other restorations.
